Thanks for shaking things up with IRIS — the new go-to coffee grounds shaker by Repertoire. Whether you’re just unboxing your IRIS or trying to perfect your puck prep, this page is here to help. Below you’ll find everything from how to use IRIS to common questions, troubleshooting tips, and care instructions.
What’s in the box:
- 1 x IRIS coffee grounds shaker
- 1 x Clear leveler-lid
How to Use:
- Grind your espresso grounds directly into IRIS.
- Close the lid and give it a good shake (we find a moderate figure 8 and side by side shake brings best results - see the video below)
- Place IRIS on portafilter
- Drop grounds using our unique aperture opening by gently twisting the lower ring while holding the top part of IRIS.
- Distribute using the clear lid or your preferred distribution tool.
- Tamp as usual and pull your shot.
- Cleaning:
- After use, tap out any excess grounds or use a wet cloth to remove any debris.
- For deep cleaning, rinse IRIS with warm water and mild soap. Dry thoroughly by leaving the aperture partly open.
- Avoid dishwasher, harsh chemicals or scrubbing sponges to preserve the coating and finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does IRIS actually do?
IRIS is a coffee grounds shaker, that evenly distributes your espresso grounds before tamping, reducing channeling and improving shot consistency. It also functions as a dosing cup, funnel, and distribution tool — all in one.
Do I need a WDT (Weiss Distribution Tool) if I use IRIS?
Not really. IRIS replaces the need for a WDT for most users by evenly redistributing clumps. However, some still prefer combining both for maximum precision. It’s up to you how far you want to take it.
Is IRIS compatible with all portafilters?
IRIS fits all 54mm - 58mm baskets by default. If you’re using a smaller portafilter (e.g.51mm), we recommend checking back in the future for accessories (sign up to be notified) or look for generic adapters.
Can I use IRIS with a bottomless portafilter?
Absolutely — IRIS is designed to dose cleanly into both spouted and bottomless portafilters.
How do I clean IRIS?
Is the lid magnetic or threaded?
As much as we would have loved to build in a magnetic snap, we found our o-ring design provided most reliable, quick, and satisfying on and off — no twisting required.
Can I replace the screen or lid?
Yes. Replacement parts will be available through our online store soon. Sign up for our newsletter to be notified.
Why does shaking improve espresso extraction?
Shaking breaks up clumps and redistributes fines evenly throughout the puck, reducing the risk of uneven water flow (channeling) and improving flavor clarity. Check out our video here.
My IRIS is getting sticky. What should I do?
Oils from coffee can build up over time. A deep clean with mild soap and warm water will restore its smooth function.
Will IRIS work with pre-ground coffee?
Sure, though results are best with freshly ground beans due to better particle uniformity and less static.
What material is IRIS made from?
Where is IRIS made?
IRIS is designed, finished and assembled in Canada. We source our raw materials and parts from our trusted production partners overseas.
How do I get the most consistent results?
Use a consistent grind, shake IRIS for 2–4 seconds in both horizontal and vertical motions, and tamp evenly. See here for shaking tips.
Does shaking cause static build up?
Actually our DLC coating reduces the amount of static caused by grinding. However, fresh beans and avoiding overly fine grinds will help with this as well.
What’s the warranty on IRIS?
We offer a 90 day warranty on IRIS. If you do end up running over it with your car, your dog eats it or it falls into your blender (these actions aren’t recommended or supported), we do offer parts for sale to repair it.
What’s the fines retention rate on IRIS?
The retention rate is negligible. We found most grinders had much significantly more retention.
How does IRIS handle light vs dark roasts?
Iris does not judge your coffee beans. It is designed to work equally well with any type of bean.
Can I travel with IRIS?
